X - Pindral, Scott, Jonathan, and Devin arrive

06/2005
What can I say? I used to think 6 month gaps in the band diary were bad. This represents an 18 month gap. So let's get right to it. Jamie, partly out of frustration with how Singularity was flailing in late 2003, joined another band: Pindral. I think it provided him with a much-needed additional outlet since we weren't doing a whole lot of anything at the time. Shortly thereafter, we invited Scott to join the band. Scott accepted. Then, after auditioning several bass players, we invited Jonathan Patch to join the band. Jonathan accepted. Several months later, my wife had a baby. And I went from being a partial mess to being a total mess.

Did I say 6 months? Apparently it's now 6-TEEN months. But I suppose sixteen months is better than sixteen years, which is when the next entry might show up. Despite the seemingly slow pace, we have managed to play 3 live shows in the last 2 1/2 years, including an opening set for "The Beard". That's 3 more live shows than we ever played before, and I have come to understand and even embrace the importance of preparation and performance in the grand scheme of music composition. Modern technology has empowered every individual to sound like a full band in recorded form, but the true challenge is to actually BE a band (or an individual) and represent your music in a live setting. To the extent that music is an extension of oneself, it does not currently make sense to me to write or record anything that cannot be expressed in any real way in any given moment. In the same way I seem to be regressing in terms of sounds (Scott's B3 and Leslie 910 are my absolute favorite instrument right now), I also seem to be regressing (or progressing) in terms of imagined versus real expression. I credit that change to my bandmates, who are all very talented and expressive musicians as opposed to what I am, which is a desperate imaginer.
