Review for Between Sunlight and Shadow
I must admit I was dragging my feet purchasing the new Singularity album
due to the fact I had heard reference made to similarities between this
title and Marillion's 'Brave'. Not being a real big fan of post-Fish era
Marillion I was not overly excited, but upon listening(4x) now the only
real similarities I can decipher would be both titles have a dark and
brooding atmosphere to them which is what I liked most about 'Brave', but
past that, no comparisons can be made. I think that any attempt to compare
Singularity to other bands, as was done with Rush in several reviews of
their debut, will be made in vain. This is an incredible album, beyond
comparisons to other bands. It sounds like Singularity. I am not a
musician, but merely an avid progressive rock fan, so cannot comment on
the technical aspects, though all sounds of a great prog rock album are in
place. As stated earlier to this listener's ears the overall vibe is 'dark
and brooding'. The fact this album is actually on 43:28 minute opus
divided into 15 parts is tempting enough, but there is not a wasted moment
here, and that makes for the delivery of a great concept album. The
dynamics of this album please me most. Moogs weave thru sonic soundscapes,
then the fury of hell erupts heavy with guitars, keys, and thundering
percussion, to be replaced by gentle reflective moments. Many keyboard
sounds, intricate to heavy guitar counterpointing the keys perfectly,
rounded out by drums that execute perfectly, nothing as stated earlier is
wasted here down to the last drum beat. Between Sunlight and Shadow
should at the least be in every record store in the region. There are
albums being released on 'prog' labels that do not have the balls this
release does, and feel that if this title were heard by the right ears,
would get label attention. My expectations of this release were somehow
lowered, and I got knocked on my ass. If I had had high expectations they
would surely have been met. An A+, 10, two thumbs up,,,whatever.....this
album kicks ass.
